We rarely experience the city as a series of still or sharp frames. Instead, we move through the urban landscape in a fluid dance between light and shadow. This project explores that sensory reality through long exposure photography and physical gesture. By using the city of Chicago as a brush and moving the camera during the exposure, I record a singular choreography between the subject and the photographer.
Each piece of these collages corresponds to a frame, and each is a different distinct moment in time. Every line and hue is a direct translation of light and motion from a specific place and time. Even in total abstraction, the photograph remains an index of the real world, an impression of a place shaped by the movements of a human body.
The photos making up the collages were created in-camera, by pairing long exposures with camera movement, then digitally arranged in a collage.
